From my short experience, as single developer in a small company.

I found enrichinng to help other peers (I do so mainly in newsgroups and mailing lists). It's often interresting when the primary question is concise when readers can seek the point of the poster. the first replies are often a quick first thought and someone else join with some more points, detailing his own experience etc...

On the other hand the most interesting discussions occurs with developers that work on very distinct projects and discuss in real life, that enable to share some global summary on how the things works for such or such part.

Allowing to interract further with more detailed questions.
