UNITAR Campus on ICTs and Diplomacy

I'll be speaking this week, on August 19th, as part of the Intel/United Nations Institute for Training and Research Campus on ICTs and Diplomacy at the UN Headquarters in New York City. It will be a wide-ranging talk about the many "open approaches" to information technologies for international development, touching on the challenge of the digital divide, Hacker Culture, open standards, OpenOffice in China, Linux in Africa, and the Open Archive Initiative. I'll be posting the presentation in a few days.

U of T in the Fall

I just received word of my official acceptance to the University of Toronto's Ph.D. program in Information Studies, with a planned specialization in Knowledge Media Design. I'm joining FIS at a very interesting time for the faculty, and for information studies generally, with fundamental changes underway to the art and science of the library.

I have put together what I think is a very good program of research with my advisor, Andrew Clement, tying together international development, knowledge management, and community informatics. I am working out the logistics of being in Toronto once a week, and while not sure how things will work, it's full speed ahead.
