I will be going to hell because of a book - two books, in fact. One was Bruce Sterling's Hacker Crackdown; the other Cliff Stoll's The Cuckoo's Egg. Both were about hackers, and it was 1993.


I had been a hacker, once. Just as when I was an "activist," I had never styled myself as such. First, in the pure sense of a coder, learning BASIC on a TRS-80 in the early-1980s. Then, after a year of computer science at Dalhousie, cracking the university Macintosh lab's Appletalk LAN. So, after the fact, I saw myself as a hacker.
